Abstract:

OpenNTN is an open-source simulation platform for NTN channels developed at ANT. In its basic form, OpenNTN is an implementation of the models specified by the 3GPP standard for NTN simulations. However, not all aspects relevant for realistic satellite communication scenarios are currently covered by the standard.

A major limitation of the current models is the consideration of discrete simulation snapshots or short time intervals instead of a fully continuous temporal evolution of the channel. As a result, longer satellite passes (flyover scenarios), in which both the satellite and the users move continuously, can only be represented to a limited extent.

Within this project, the OpenNTN implementation will be extended to reduce this limitation. Suitable models will be identified and implemented to enable the generation of spatially and temporally consistent channels. At the same time, the extensions should remain compatible with the framework's simple user interface and preserve the high simulation performance of OpenNTN.

The extended implementation will be validated against suitable reference data and models. The goal of this work is to enable the simulation of realistic satellite flyover scenarios in OpenNTN, including continuous movement patterns of both satellites and users.
