A fully funded 2-year postdoctoral research position is available in the Department of Communications Engineering of University of Bremen, Germany.

The excellent candidate will conduct research on 6G Non-Terrestrial-Networks/3D networks focusing on the design, prototyping and testing of innovative 6G concepts and algorithms.

The main tasks include

  • leading the 6G test-bed activities of the Dept. of Communications Engineering and its associated activities of the Gauss-Olbers Space-Technology Transfer Center (GOC)
  • guidance on algorithm design, SDR implementations, and testing
  • collaborating with a broad ecosystem of public-private partners in advancing the frontiers of 6G Non-Terrestrial Networks and its applications. This includes contributions to third-party funding projects such as 6G-TakeOff, Open6GHub and AIComS.
  • participation in the prioritization of research directions of the department and the GOC
  • acquisition of new research projects and funding opportunities
  • directing the work of the student group “Software Defined Radio” on the software implementation of innovative technologies, e.g., in an 6G testbed
  • supervision of student project work including Bachelor- and Master theses

Who we are:

The Department of Communication Engineering has many years of expertise in the research and development of communications systems, algorithms and signal processing methods. Through participation in programs of the German Research Foundation (DFG), cooperative projects of the European Union (EU), European Space Agency (ESA), and German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as well as industrial projects, the results of basic research find direct utilization in the development and standardization of mobile radio systems, industrial radio systems and space communication systems.

Qualifications:

  • Very good completed scientific university studies (Master/Diploma) in communications engineering/information technology or a closely related field
  • A PhD degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field
  • A strong background in wireless communications (baseband, resource management, protocols, networks)
  • Profound experience in SDR implementations, prototyping and testing including programming and development environments (e.g. Python, MATLAB, C++, GNU Radio)
  • Experience with open software platforms for prototyping (e.g. srsRAN, OpenAirInterface)
  • High motivation to work within trans-disciplinary research projects
  • Very good oral and written communication skills in English, ideally basic German skills

A fully funded 3-year PhD research position is available in the Department of Communications Engineering of University of Bremen, Germany.

The excellent candidate will conduct research on 6G wireless communication concepts and algorithms with special focus on Non-Terrestrial-Networks/3D networks.

The main tasks include

  • Designing, testing and prototyping of innovative 6G concepts and algorithms (baseband, resource management)
  • Real-time capable software implementations of 6G baseband technologies for their use with Software Defined Radios (SDRs), e.g. Ettus N310
  • Developing and operating a 3D network testbed with base stations, rovers, drones and satellite communications to research 6G networks
  • submit publications to refereed conferences and journals

Open Research Associate Position

The Department of Communications Engineering (headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Armin Dekorsy) of University of Bremen offers an open position for a research associate.

The Department of Communications Engineering has many years of expertise in the research and development of communication systems, algorithms and signal processing methods. In addition to scientific-technical research, the Department of Communications Engineering has also been conducting scientific-organisational research activities for several years, especially in the topic area of "5G for industry" and, in the future, also for 6G for the implementation of a German 6G strategy. In the position offered, these scientific-organisational research activities are to be carried out for 6G through participation in the "6G Platform" project funded by the BMBF. The 6G Platform is part of the BMBF's 6G programme, which also includes the 6GHubs (basic research) and the 6G industry projects. The 6G-Platform brings together several national research teams with the aim of networking actors from different industrial sectors, harmonising technical approaches, ensuring that societal interests are taken into account in technological approaches and promoting the visibility of German research in politics and society. 

Responsibilities

The main focus of the position is on (inter)national scientific-organisational activities. However, the position also includes the support and cooperation with scientific staff of the Department of Communications Engineering and thus enables the participation and active involvement in scientific-technical research on 6G. 

Examples of key tasks are:

  • Management of work package AP3 of the 6G-Platform for visioning a highly networked society of the future. This includes the analysis of application scenarios, evaluation and assessment of technological approaches and innovation content, harmonisation and preparation of research results, and the development of a 6G roadmap
  • Coordination of the harmonisation of technological approaches by and with (inter-) national stakeholders
  • Networking with projects in the BMBF's 6G programme and international 6G programmes, networking and participation in committees and standardisation organisations, networking with other relevant sectors (e.g. medicine, automotive, automation) and industry
  • Establishment and management of a research group in the field of communications engineering
  • Responsible planning and implementation of events
  • Science communication and public relations

Profile of qualification

  • A very good university degree (Master's/Diploma) or a doctorate in electrical engineering, information technology, computer engineering or related engineering or natural sciences
  • Good knowledge of communication technologies and systems
  • Strong interest in self-dependent strategic-political research activities
  • Extensive experience in project acquisition and participation in (inter-)national research projects
  • Ability to work and acquire knowledge and skills independently
  • Very good communication and teamwork skills
  • Very good written and spoken German (at least level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF)

Desirable knowledge and skills:

  • Publication experience (journals, conference proceedings)
  • Initial experiences in supervising students and doctoral candidates
  • Good written and spoken English language skills (at least level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF)

Open PhD/PostDoc Positions

We have open positions for research assistants (PhD) / postdocs at the Department of Communications Engineering of University of Bremen with Prof. Armin Dekorsy. 

We are looking for excellent candidates to carry out independent research in the following areas:

  • 6G communication system 
  • Aerial and satellite communications 
  • Swarm exploration on Mars 
  • Quantum communications 

Your task will be at least one of the following 

  • Fundamental, theoretical-oriented research 
  • Software implementation of innovative technologies, e.g. in an 6G testbed

Potential research topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Semantic communication
