PHY Layer Design for mmWave Access

5G wireless access is expected to embrace mmWave frequencies to provide multi-Gbps data rates, typically in small cell deployments. To obtain a transmission range on the order of ~100m as required for a metro cell deployment requires high gain adaptive beamforming solutions, a.k.a. massive MIMO. In this collaboration project we intend to assess design options for the mmWave physical layer. This includes a link level simulation study comparing waveforms such as single-carrier versus multi-carrier (OFDM, UFMC) modulation options and the impact of HW impairments (phase noise, non-linearity, DAC/ADC resolution, array calibration, etc.) for mmWave transmissions.
